Making an ImPACT to better manage Concussion care.

ImPACT® Testing

We offer BASELINE ImPACT® testing as well as Post-Injury ImPACT® testing.

ImPACT® (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized tool used nationwide to help evaluate and manage concussions. It is FDA-cleared for use in individuals aged 5 and older.

A baseline test can be done before the sports season to establish each child’s typical cognitive function. In the event of a head injury, a post-injury ImPACT® test can then be compared to this baseline to help determine whether the brain has returned to its pre-injury state.

Baseline testing is recommended for all children age 5 and up who participate in contact or collision sports.

Pediatric Neurology Concussion

This non-invasive test is presented in a video game-style format and takes about 30 minutes to complete. It measures areas such as memory, reaction time, processing speed, and concentration.

ImPACT® is not an IQ test and poses no known risks to patients. The results from the baseline test serve as a comparison point if your child sustains a concussion in the future. This helps healthcare providers determine when it’s safe to return to play.

Children age 5 and up who participate in contact sports are eligible for baseline ImPACT® testing. However, the test should be delayed if the child has had a concussion within the past 30 days, as symptoms may interfere with accurate baseline results.

We recommend that children ages 5 to 12 complete the test annually. For those age 13 and older, the test should be repeated every two years.

Patients should avoid strenuous physical activity, such as gym class, for at least 3 hours before the test.

Post-injury ImPACT® testing should be administered at multiple points following a concussion to monitor recovery and guide return-to-play decisions.

At this time, the Baseline ImPACT® test is covered by most insurance plans. However, if it is not covered by your insurance, we offer a discounted rate of $50, which is due at the time of service.

Post-injury ImPACT® testing is typically covered by insurance and is included as part of your routine neurological follow-up visits.
