Making an impact to better manage Concussion care.
We are pleased to announce that we offer BASELINE ImPACT® testing as well as Post-Injury ImPACT® testing.
ImPACT® (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized exam used across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. It has recently been approved by the FDA for ages 5-years-old and up.
ImPACT® BASELINE testing establishes a baseline of normal cognitive function for each child. The BASELINE test will then be used as part of a Post-Injury clinical evaluation to determine recovery following a concussion.
ImPACT® testing is recommended for all patients 5 years or older that participate in contact sports.
How does the BASELINE test (ImPACT®) work?
This non-invasive test is set up in a “video game” type format and takes about 30-minutes to complete. The test tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. It is not an IQ test and poses no risk to patients.
The result of the BASELINE test is used as a benchmark (comparison) tool to determine if your child can safely return to play following a subsequently incurred concussion.
Who should receive this test?
Anyone participating in contact sports 5-years-old and older can receive this BASELINE test. Patients should not receive the test if they have had a concussion within the past 30 days.
How often should my child receive the test?
We recommend children between the ages of 5-years-old and 12-years-old take the test annually. Children over the age of 13-years-old should complete the test every two years.
How should I prepare my child for the test?
Patients should not engage in strenuous exercise or activity (e.g. gym class) 3-hours prior to the test.
Can I receive follow-up ImPACT® testing?
Post-Injury ImPACT® testing can be performed serially following a concussion.
Is there a cost for the ImPACT® test?
At this time, the Baseline ImPACT® test may not be covered by your insurance. There is a $35 charge due at the time of service. Post-Injury ImPACT® testing is covered by insurance and is part of your routine follow-up neurological evaluations.
